Vera Bradley handbags and accessories splash UCF campus with fun colors and patterns
Date: Wednesday July 30, 2008Posted in: Vera Bradley
Walking around UCF, it’s almost certain that students will see hallways filled with girls sporting the floral sensation known as Vera Bradley. But as the quilted handbag brand grows with new patterns and accessories, the UCF obsession continues to blossom right in accordance to this Southern craze.
Candi Neuweiler, studio owner of the Oviedo Marketplace Merle Norman, which sells the Vera Bradley line, said that sales of Vera Bradley in her store have grown 74 percent in the last year. She attributes this growth to the brand’s popularity at UCF, which is now spreading into local high schools.
“They’re [Vera Bradley] definitely more popular in the college age,” Neuweiler said. “For that time in between classes you need to bring your books and all your stuff, Vera Bradley can offer lots of help with that. There’s lots of laptop cases, totes, pencil cases, stationery and things like that, so it makes sense for these women on the go. Also, it’s huge among the sororities.”
Stefanie Elliott, a nursing major and senior beauty adviser at Merle Norman, agreed.
“I would say daily we get UCF students in here buying Vera,” Elliott said, who works at Neuweiler’s store in Oviedo.
For those who aren’t familiar with the Vera Bradley line, the company started in 1982 when founders Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley were in an airport in Atlanta and noticed a lack of feminine-style luggage. The brand was named after Bradley’s mother, Vera Bradley, and is known for its styles that offer a lot of pockets and versatility.
Still, the question remains on why the line has gained such popularity at UCF. Neuweiler said the bags have gained tremendous popularity in the South and in the New England area. However, towards the west, in places like California, the brand struggles to even get noticed.
Elliott said that the bags are just handy and have lots of pockets and are very practical for everyday use and travel. Neuweiler agreed, saying they are very versatile and you can use them for practically anything whether it be used as luggage, a beach bag, a makeup bag or just to complement an outfit. She also said as more and more people buy the product, more and more people catch on to the trend.
“It’s like a unique bond you have with somebody else because they’re carrying what you like,” Neuweiler said. “But you are going to look totally different carrying it than your other friend. They have so many different style purses and handbags and accessories that there’s something for everyone - the age span is 2 years old to people over 90.”
Both also asserted that their price tag has a lot to do with their popularity. Vera Bradley bags range in price from $27 to $92, according to the Vera Bradley Web site.
“They are real practical and there are all different styles, and for me I don’t want to carry a bag that’s really really expensive that I’m going to be putting on the floor,” Elliott said. “These are fairly inexpensive and you can wash them. Plus, you can get accessories to match and get a whole collection.”
But as more and more women fawn over the style, an up and coming breed of men have sparked interest in the brand. Kenny Hart, a mechanical engineering major, said he proudly wears the line of Vera Bradley neck ties. The line also offers cumberbunds, bowties, cufflinks and pocket squares for men.
“I wanted one because they look awesome and they’re fratty,” Hart said. “They’re like 20,000 different colors and they’re all ridiculous”
On the other hand, some students like Nicole Bodchon, a hospitality management major, refuse to buy into the fad.
“My opinion is that it reminds me of something my grandma and all of her friends have,” Bodchon said, who prefers to carry unique off-brand styles and surf styles like Roxy and O’Neill.
Bodchon said she has never been interested in the brand and thinks it’s only popular because girls think it matches everything when it doesn’t.
Even so, as the company continues to come out with new styles and prints, the popularity remains in a state of constant growth. But will the trend last?
Ashley Connelly, an event management major who regularly sports her Vera attire, thinks the style is here to stay.
“They’re actually affordable and cute,” she said. “I think it will last because Vera Bradley comes out with new designs all the time and people will gravitate towards the new designs rather than a new trend, I think.”
Bodchon felt otherwise.
“It will definitely fade because there will be a new type of Kinsey coming out and people will get hooked on that in no time, and the old lady look will be back to the old ladies,” Bodchon said.
In the meantime, Neuweiler said her Merle Norman will continue to cater to the UCF crowd and even offer a 10 percent discount to customers with a UCF student ID.
There are very few things that will interest an 8-year-old girl and an 80-year-old woman at the same time.
It makes perfect sense.
These two drastically different groups would be challenged to find any common ground.
Within the accessories market, there is a company that has found the magic formula for producing products embraced by women from all stages of life.
Well known for excellent quality and exclusive patterned designs, Vera Bradley has solidified its spot as a hit among gals of all ages.
Company founders Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Baekgaard were on vacation in March 1982. While waiting for a flight, they didn’t see luggage designed specifically for women.
Upon their return home, they quickly began creating a company (named after Bradley Baekgaard’s mother) that could market and manufacture the types of items they felt the industry was missing.
Twenty-five successful years later, the patterned, quilted bags are in high demand around the world.
By introducing new patterns and styles each season, the people at Vera Bradley keep the interest of their customer base piqued.
Additionally, some patterns are discontinued, thus creating a “club member” mentality for longtime fans.
One particular Vera Bradley retailer is making it even easier for women to come together.
In June, I attended a “Vera Bradley Party” at Payning’s by Caryn in Cold Spring.
Shop owner Caryn Cannova decided to have the party to celebrate the launch of the line within her boutique, which is nestled in the heart of Main Street.
For the past eight years, Cannova has served up specialty gift brands such as Lampe Berger, Kaloo (baby), Cloud B (baby), Webkinz, Penguin books and many other unique and interesting items to her customer base of locals and tourists.
Vera Bradley seemed like a sure fit for this special shop.
It took Cannova nearly 10 months to get approved. Vera Bradley has a very rigorous process for obtaining the right to vend its product, thus enhancing the exclusivity of the brand.
The party was a lovely evening of wine, snacks and bags.
Mothers and daughters, friends and colleagues all came together to check out Cannova’s wide selection of Vera Bradley products.
Cannova showed off the newest styles and prints and highlighted some of the older items nearing the end of their runs.
I purchased the “Miller Bag” in yellow bird, which quickly became one of my favorites.
It is extremely light, with plenty of space and compartments to keep me organized.
Most of all, I love its versatility.
Monday through Friday I can use it for work, as it easily holds my laptop and everything else I have a habit of carting around with me.
It also makes for the perfect weekend bag.
Perhaps the most impressive thing is how well it held up as a beach bag for a recent weekend in Newport, R.I.
Once home I was able to pop out the fabric-covered lining bottom and toss it in the washing machine and - voila! - my bag was more ready than I was to go back to work.
The brand’s ability to appeal to such a wide range of ages is the key to its success and longevity.
Based on the attendees of the party, it was easy to see the product is completely appropriate for a 5-year-old girl as well as her great-grandmother.
The recipe for that type of acceptance is no easy task.
The wide variety of styles (backpacks, lunch bags, computer cases, totes, etc.) appeal to gals with different types of day-to-day activities.
On top of that, the array of colorful prints means there is something for everyone.
Mix and match
The most modern way to wear Vera Bradley is with a matching outfit.
These bags look great when paired with an outfit (in terms of actual clothing and jewelry) that incorporates colors from the print of the bag.
Stray from wearing heavily printed tops or bottoms with your Vera Bradley bag; often, that look can overwhelm.
As if providing the marketplace with functional and stylish bags wasn’t enough, there is also a Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, which is focused on a “revolutionary biomarker technology that reveals crucial genetic information.”
Vera Bradley is a common bond for modern women of all ages. It makes for a lovely gift for yourself or someone else.
You can find nearly every style and print available at Payning’s By Caryn.
It is a great place to head for the afternoon with your family and friends to find a delightful new addition to your accessories collection.
Happy shopping!

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The owner of a company that used to assemble handbags and other accessories for Fort Wayne-based Vera Bradley Designs is suing for breach of contract.
The suit was filed by Robert Hinty, a majority owner of 3 companies that had contracts to sew products for Vera Bradley. In March, Vera Bradley announced it was taking the business in-house.
According to a lawsuit, the decision has left Hinty to repay a three million dollar loan taken out less than three years earlier to expand business with the handbag company. The suit seeks unspecified damages.
A spokeswoman for Vera Bradley says the company doesn’t comment on legal matters. Hinty couldn’t be reached for comment.

Fort Wayne, IN — Seizing the opportunity to help its retail partners grow with the brand, fashion accents manufacturer Vera Bradley is set to become the latest company in the gift industry to bring its sales force in-house. According to a company spokesman, the move to an employee sales organization will allow Vera Bradley salespeople to perform in a more consultative capacity with retailers.
“To achieve this, we must have a greater degree of control, relative to the activities of the sales force,” said Mike Ray, vice president of sales and marketing for Vera Bradley.
Of course, Vera Bradley is by no means the first company in the industry to take its sales in-house. Demdaco did so just last October, saying the decision was extremely difficult while expressing a vote of confidence in the very reps they were no longer doing business with. When Toland (pre-buyout) switched from independent reps to a team of in-house telemarketers in 2000, the event drew a storm of comment in the pages of Gifts & Dec.
Other companies have gone back and forth through the years. Enesco (pre-reorganization) brought its sales in house in 2001; in a move similar to Vera Bradley’s, it offered its former reps the chance to stay as employees. But a year later the company reversed course, at least in part, and farmed the Milieu home decor product line back out to independents. Giftware Holdings took its Michel & Co. sales force in-house when it bought the company in December 1997; but when Michel Studio took over in 2001, the line was promptly sent to independent reps once again.
Vera Bradley’s decision to convert to an employee organization was made after an in-depth evaluation of the needs of the company and its retail partners. “The economics of the independent sales model no longer make sense for our business,” said Ray. According to the company, another reason for the move is that some independent reps were hiring “sub-reps” for Vera Bradley lines — a practice that further distances the company from retailers, thereby diluting the brand.
Founder and owner Barbara Baekgaard confirmed to Gifts & Dec that the company has notified its independent sales reps of the new business strategy; she also indicated that those who currently rep for Vera Bradley will be offered the opportunity to join the employee sales force.
As a result of the change in sales strategy, Vera Bradley will no longer exhibit at showrooms in Seattle, Los Angeles and Dallas, and will launch the Vera Bradley Premiere this Fall in six cities: Las Vegas, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Chicago and Washington, DC.
The 10 stores scheduled to open by the end of this year include locations in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago (two), Memphis, TN; Birmingham, AL; Kansas City, MO; Bridgewater, NJ and Milwaukee, WI.
Vera Bradley Tropical Silk Limited Edition Kelly
Date: Saturday July 12, 2008Posted in: Vera Bradley
The Vera Bradley trend is huge in some parts of the country. Anyone sitting there shaking their head up-and-down thinking about Sorority girls who carry them? Maybe you are one of them. It’s cool. I never fully got on the Vera bandwagon, but I never completely disliked her bags. One of my best friends since we were merely 10 pointed me towards a new Vera bag today that she is head-over-heels in love with. Best part is that the price is more than affordable when it comes to the world of handbags. The Vera Bradley Tropical Silk Limited Edition Kelly shows off a retro-floral print with an oval wooden handle. Just like the moon (on some nights at least), the bag is a crescent shape. On the inside there is pink logo lining and three pockets. This bag is large enough for me to again confirm that it is worth the price. Sizing up at 15″ x 8.5″ x 1.5″.
Fort Wayne, IN — The annual golf and tennis charity fundraising event held by Vera Bradley Designs raised a record $540,543 this year. The Vera Bradley Classic, which raises money for the fight against breast cancer, began in 1994.
