Playful Potter studio owner Denise Oliver won the Create for the Cure Member Award at the international convention for Contemporary Ceramic Studios Association (CCSA) held in Phoenix, Ariz., September 5-8. Oliver was honored by convention attendees for creating the best pottery piece for the charity auction that benefited the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

CCSA, comprised of over 700 studios from throughout the world, choose the Vera Bradley Foundation as the beneficiary of the organization’s charity auction of pottery art created by the CCSA studios. Oliver’s creation, a colorful and playful fountain that featured 10 different ceramic techniques commonly used at pottery painting studios as well as 12 fused glass pieces. At auction, the piece sold for $2,100. In total, CCSA raised $33,000 for the Vera Bradley Foundation.

“The piece was the result of 60 hours work by my manager Tabatha Wade and myself,” said Oliver. “There were many fantastic examples of creative ceramic art submitted and I was very surprised and pleased that the Playful Potter fountain was selected for the award.”

“The fountain was the member award winner, and the big winner of the night was a clock created by Julie Cates from On the Pot in Salina, Kansas that sold for $8,000 and received the Create for the Cure Supplier Award,” added Oliver. “It was gratifying to provide these funds to the Vera Bradley Foundation. CCSA selected the foundation because 100% of the funds raised go to research,” explained Oliver who serves on the CCSA board of directors.

Playful Potter, located at 1351 E. Prater Way in Sparks, has been serving pottery artists from Washoe County for more than six years. Besides drop-in painting, the studio offers glass fusing, party packages for birthdays and other celebrations, story time for children every Friday morning and other events and activities that can be seen on playfulpotter.com or call 356-5811 for more information.

Vera Bradley Products

The American design company known as Vera Bradley Designs, Inc is famous for the soft, brightly patterned bags that they create. The Fort Wayne company, on the other hand, produces items such as quilted cotton luggage, handbags, as well as accessories. These products can be found either at the 3,500 retailers or even at Vera Bradley stores.

Vera Bradley bags come in a range of styles, colors, patterns, and sizes. Here, you can find travel duffels, medium sized totes, large totes, purses, wallets, watches, belts, glass cases, cosmetic cases, dog leashes, dog collars, and dog bags. In addition to these, you can also find umbrellas, napkins, place mats, rolling luggage, tableware, bedding, furniture, fine rugs, accessory coverings, and stationery. You can also get products for your pets such as leashes, collars, beds, and carriers for small dogs, cats, and rabbits. The purses have different names such as Sherry, The Bucket Tote, Amy, etc. You can get their products for as little as $10. While Katie is the cheapest, the Boxy Tote is the most expensive bag.

Usually, the company retires the patterns that have been in the market for some time and replaces them by newer designs. New designs are usually launched in January or July and in the fall colors. The company also redesigns old patterns and introduces new ones to keep up with the trend of the time.

The Vera Bradley back sack fits the bill perfectly, simply because it’s a sack that can be conveniently carried on your back. It’s a fun, modern variation of the classic old backpack?

The back sack is a great, lightweight option for carrying your personal items around. While it is easy to open and close (you can do so by tugging the straps), it is quite secure when closed, so you never have to worry about your stuff falling out!

At the Vera Bradley outlet sales, you can find several of their products, such as purses, totes, luggage, and handbags at cheaper rates. However, these sales aren’t held too often, so you have to be on your guard so that you don’t miss them. You have to quite persistent if you’re interested in buying Vera Bradley items at discounted rates.

Sometimes Vera Bradley products are found on eBay. These are usually used products or duplicate ones that a person may have. This is why a great number of products can be found on eBay. Occasionally they even sell at rates that are higher than the retail price; this is because of the company policy of retiring particular designs after they’ve been on the market for a while.

At times like these, most Vera Bradley fans set out to get themselves these designs that are no longer freely available. Like most things, Vera Bradley designs are a hit because only a limited number of them are available. As a result, the prices shoot up because the demand is much greater than the supply.

Patricia R. Miller’s visit is made possible through funding provided by the Cummins Foundation.
She will present a lecture titled “A life-long pursuit of learning is the grand prize in human existence” on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. in the Napolitan Student Center’s Branigin Room.

In addition, Miller will give a public address titled “Be your Own Best Friend” on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbus Learning Center, 4555 Central Avenue, Columbus, Ind., as an offering of the 2008 Cummins Lecture.

“What an honor it is to be chosen as a 2008 Cummins Lecturer!” said Miller. “Ethics in the workplace and in the world are vital to creating a positive and vibrant life. Franklin College is doing an amazing job instilling positive values in its students through these lectures.”

“Franklin College seeks to bring to our campus and community dynamic leaders who translate ethics into action for the common good,” said Dr. James G.
